Forget the Halloween Costumes

Trick-or-treating in Southern California consisted of cute homemade costumes, warm nights and bags filled to the brim with candy.  As our first year of Halloween in Denver approached in 1989, my family was clueless as my children chose their costumes and I worked hard creating them.
The excitement built as we anticipated hours of fun trick-or-treating....... To our amazement, the temperatures fell to 24 degrees, the winds gusted to 31 mph and 3inches of snow covered the ground on Halloween night.  By the time the kids were dressed in heavy coats, hats and mittens, there was no sign of them even wearing costumes.  Trying to make the best of the situation we piled into our 15-passenger greyhound van and drove to the houses.  The bitter cold and lack of costumes killed the spirit of Halloween and after a few houses the kids asked to go home.  Those were the good old days – days never to be forgotten.
